• The ENANDES project seeks adaptation to climate variability and climate change in communities in the Andes

December 29, 2023. A virtual meeting was held with the six CRC-OSA countries: Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia and Chile for the delivery of seven regional databases that provide climate variables, a fundamental product for research , data management and climate services. At the moment they are only available for the meteorological services of the countries in western South America, as well as other users of the CIIFEN/CRC-OSA; From 2024, all citizens will be able to access this information.

The ENANDES project is a regional program financed by the Adaptation Fund and implemented by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), the meteorological services of Chile (DMC), Peru (SENAMHI), Colombia (IDEAM) and CIIFEN. The project continues to generate processes to improve the capacity of communities to adapt to climate variability and climate change through the development, dissemination and evaluation of the use of information from reliable and authoritative sources. With this, it is intended that the information developed within the framework of the project is useful for decision-making and the formulation of public policies on preparing for climate dangers and reducing their damage in the three countries.

“The work done seems very good to me, it is recognized that these global grid databases are focused on processing maps of large areas at a global level, and obtaining information for small areas is really useful because it saves a lot of time and very laborious work” said José Guijarro, data expert and former WMO official. “The tool is very interesting and super useful; very friendly and easy to use” said Ricardo Vásquez, an official from the Chilean Meteorological Directorate. 

From CIIFEN and CRC-OSA within the framework of the ENANDES project, we will continue working to mitigate the impacts of climate variability, extreme phenomena and the El Niño/Niña Phenomenon.
