Zurich, SwitzerlandFrom May 4 to 8, 2026, specialists from the National Meteorological and Hydrological Services of the Andean countries participated in a technical internship at the Swiss Federal Office of Meteorology and Climatology (MeteoSwiss), aimed at strengthening the management, quality and use of meteorological information, fundamental aspects to improve climate services and support decision-making.
This internship is part of the ENANDES+ project, a regional initiative financed by the Adaptation Fund and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation and implemented by the World Meteorological Organization, uniting regional efforts to strengthen the technical and institutional capacities of Andean meteorological services, promoting knowledge exchange, cooperation between countries and the development of climate services.
Participants gained firsthand knowledge of MeteoSwiss's structure and operational processes, exploring the complete meteorological data cycle: from field measurements to their transformation into products and services. The event also facilitated an active technical exchange, where specialists shared experiences, challenges, and best practices from their respective countries.
The agenda included sessions on the SwissMetNet surface observation network, data flow to centralized systems, and data warehouse architecture, with an emphasis on the standardization of parameters and variables. Quality control processes (both automated and manual) and methodologies for homogenizing climatological series were also addressed. International initiatives such as WIGOS, the OSCAR platform, the Global Baseline Observing Network (GBON), and the implementation of WIS 2.0 were also reviewed.
Among the highlights was the presentation of MeteoSwiss's drought monitor, a tool that incorporates drought forecasting capabilities and complements traditional monitoring based on past and present conditions. This presentation fostered a valuable technical exchange among specialists regarding the strengthening of climate alert and monitoring systems in the region.
The event included the participation of Sergio Pérez, representative of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation in Bern, who highlighted the importance of the ENANDES+ project to strengthen the technical capacities of the Meteorological and Hydrological Services of the Andean countries.
The ENANDES+ project continues to strengthen capacities in the Andean region, promoting knowledge integration and the development of more modern and robust meteorological services for the benefit of its communities. These initiatives enhance the quality, traceability, and availability of climate information, generating accurate forecasts and supporting decision-making.
