The ENANDES project countries share distinctive climatic, environmental and cultural characteristics, due to which the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) has recognized that these countries are particularly vulnerable to climate change.
The ENANDES countries share the influence that the Andes, the most important mountain range in the southern hemisphere, exert on the climate. The extraordinary length, continuity and height of the Andes create a wide variety of environmental conditions, including fragile mountain ecosystems, arid, semi-arid and forest areas. All three countries have long, low coastlines with important fishing resources. Furthermore, the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) phenomenon, the main source of interannual climate fluctuations in many parts of the world, strongly affects the countries of the ENANDES project.
The project will provide tangible experience that will facilitate the implementation of national climate services in the three countries. In addition, real-world lessons from the ENANDES project will guide the implementation of the National Frameworks for Climate Services – which will be the next step in the evolution of the Global Framework for Climate Services, an international initiative led by the World Meteorological Organization. that the three countries have committed to creating.
