The countries involved in the ENANDES project have unique climatic, cultural and environmental characteristics. The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) has recognized that these countries are particularly vulnerable to the effects.
The influence of the Andes, the most important mountain range in the southern hemisphere, is fundamental to their climates. Their extraordinary length, continuity and altitude give rise to a diversity of environmental conditions, including fragile mountain ecosystems, as well as arid, semi-arid and forest areas. In addition, all three countries have extensive low-lying coasts that are home to important fishery resources. The El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) phenomenon, which causes interannual climate fluctuations in many regions of the world, also significantly impacts the countries.
The ENANDES project represents a valuable opportunity to implement national climate services in three countries, providing concrete experience that will facilitate their operation. The practical lessons learned through ENANDES will be instrumental in the implementation of National Frameworks for Climate Services, marking a significant step forward in the development of the Global Framework for Climate Services, an international initiative led by the World Meteorological Organization.
The Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) has joined this initiative for the ENANDES+ project, with the aim of expanding the actions of the ENANDES project, managed by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) through the Adaptation Fund.
ENANDES+ will support six of the seven Andean countries in their efforts to strengthen adaptation and resilience to climate change. Thanks to the collaboration of SDC, Argentina, Bolivia and Ecuador will join Chile, Colombia and Peru, which are already partners in the project.
